The spirited seas

Decorate your boat from bow to stern or grab a spot on the shoreline to experience this year’s Holiday Parade of Boats. Organized by the City of Charleston in partnership with the Charleston Sail and Power Squadron, the Parade of Boats begins on the Mt. Pleasant side of the Cooper River, cruises past the Battery, and concludes at the mouth of the Ashley River, giving residents of both downtown Charleston and Mt. Pleasant the opportunity to gaze at dazzling nautical displays. As far as viewing spots go, Parade of Boats Coordinator Ray Swagerty recommends setting up shop at the Riley Waterfront Park, Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park, or the Charleston Harbor Resort, adding that the Ashley River side provides the best Battery views. “I think that the most unique thing [about this event] is simply the creativity and work that the participants display. They take it seriously and it shows,” says Swagerty. Start and end times of the parade are approximate due to unpredictable winds, currents, and the ability of the boats to maintain headway in the harbor. Aargh, matey
