Holiday Magic at Marion Square

When: Dec. 6-31 2014
Phone: (843) 724-7309
Price: Free
During the holidays, Marion Square is hard to miss. The tall Christmas tree in the middle attracts both young and old to partake in the gaiety. In fact, it’s not really the holiday season until you twirl under the tree and get that trippy, giddy rush. Festivities kick off on Dec. 6 with the Tree Lighting Ceremony. The ceremony features musical, dance, and theatrical performances starting at 2 p.m. and includes acts like the Singing Eagles from Charleston Development Academy Charter School, the Palmetto Bronze Handbell Ensemble, the Charleston Community Band, and the Poetry Society of South Carolina — all there to welcome Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus to Charleston. “Captain Hook will make an appearance, the Wicked Witch of the West will make an appearance, maybe even Scrooge,” says Bill Schlitt, co-founder of The Company Company, the consulting producer of the lighting ceremony. Mayor Joe Riley will also team up with old St. Nick himself to light the tree and commence the month of merriment. The farmers market will be open every Saturday and Sunday for the rest of the month. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make appearances each weekend as well as Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 from 12-5 p.m. On Sun. Dec. 7, the City of Charleston Holiday Parade kicks off at 2 p.m. and makes its way from Colonial Lake to Marion Square. The College of Charleston Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program will celebrate Chanukah in the Square on Dec. 21 from 4-6 p.m. Enjoy kosher food and live music at the largest annual Jewish event in the state of South Carolina. Celebrate Kwanzaa in the square at the Kinari lighting ceremony on Dec. 26 from 5-6 p.m., featuring dancers, drummers, and a speaker. Wrap up the month of celebration and usher in 2015 at the Marion Square New Year’s celebration from 4-10 p.m. And since finding a parking spot anywhere in downtown is about as fun as getting coal in your stocking, free two-hour parking vouchers for select garages downtown will be available throughout December at
