Kenneth "Skinny" Melton is a Lowcountry farming veteran, having worked with Rita's Roots and Thackeray Farms before striking out on his own at a small family plot on Johns Island. He's currently cultivating two acres of organic arugula, lettuce, carrots, beets, spinach, chard, turnips, radishes, kale, mustard greens, and beans. That delicious mouthful of crops is sourced entirely from heirloom seeds and lovingly farmed by five friends, the oldest of whom is only 34. Although the farm is just getting off the ground, Heirloom Acres has been at the farmers market this fall and is planning a spring CSA. — Stratton Lawrence
