As a grad student pursuing my MBA in sustainable business, I've done extensive research on the 526 initiative. The mayor's effort re: pushing the road through w/out following proper legal channels, i.e. providing for a proper environmental impact study prior to construction of the road, is, in fact, ILLEGAL, as it violates the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) process. 526 will only shave about 36 seconds off commute times, yet it'll exact untold damage to the ecosystem. Worse, for a city making its living off a reputation for PRESERVATION we can say "Goodbye annual Conde Nast recognition and insured revenue stream!" This effort is a real bonehead move from a PR standpoint.
