Happy New Year Charleston!

When: Fri., Dec. 31, 4-10:30 p.m. 2010
Price: Free
Was your New Year’s resolution for 2010 to chill out more, party less, and spend time with the kids? And you haven’t really kept up with it? Being good on the last day of the year still counts. So ditch the bars and the balls and have some family-friendly fun at the city’s Happy New Year Charleston! Starting at 4 p.m. at Marion Square, the afternoon will be filled with drum circles, dance performances, a Kwanzaa presentation, live music from Trudy B. Grant and 7 Once Band, gospel and smooth jazz performances, RBM African dancers and drummers, and a Kidsfest Tent with arts and crafts, sing-a-longs, facepainting, and storytelling. There’s also some classical concerts at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Everything’s free, and the night culminates with a fireworks display at 10:15 p.m. That means the activities are over by 10:30 p.m. — so you can still grab some champagne downtown if you really want to. —Susan Cohen
