This talk examines the mythical and cultural significance of Venus Anadyomene, or the Birth of Venus. It looks specifically at how it can be read as an allegory for fertility and for the creation of beauty in the world. The talk investigates marine materials traditionally dedicated to Venus, including conch and scallop shells, pearls, coral, ambergris, and myrtle. It also considers water and the ocean in the context of human fertility. Finally, it speaks to how our current misuse or overuse of plastic threatens the fecundity of not only our oceans but of our own reproduction.
