If you want to be famous...

Charleston Stage opens its 39th season with a production of the classic Broadway musical, Hairspray. Set in 1962 Baltimore, during the transition from the conservative ’50s to the much looser ’60s, Hairspray chronicles the life of Tracy Turnbald who has a big heart and even bigger ambitions. Founder of Charleston Stage Julian Wiles says, “We wanted something rousing for our 39th Season opener at the Dock Street,” so bringing the musical that received eight Tony Awards in 2003 was an easy choice. Directing the season opener is Associate Director Marybeth Clark, and the orchestra will be led by Charleston Stage Music Director Sam Henderson. Some of the actors to grace the stage will include Maggie Sunders as Tracy Trunbald, Madeline Glenn Thomas as Penny Pingleton, and guest actor Jordan Barrows as Seaweed.
