In the 1980s, John Waters made a subversive film about teenagers in segregated 1960s’ Baltimore, where Ricki Lake twisted and shouted, Divine gave wise, motherly support, and pop sensation Vitamin C played a total bitch. Then in 2002, the idea was turned into a hit Broadway musical. While some purists might have been skeptical, this new Hairspray became a bona fide hit and was eventually adapted for a new movie (with John Travolta putting on the dress this time.) In their first major show of the 2010-11 season, Charleston Stage will put on the Tony Award-winning musical. Watch pleasantly plump Tracy Turnblad dance her way onto The Corny Collins Show, the hottest program on TV, helping to break down racial barriers and superficial standards along the way. The only thing that’s missing is Mink Stole. —Susan Cohen
