Nerd chic is a thing now, which is kind of strange. Glasses, suspenders, and button-ups have made fashion come-backs, and intelligence doesn’t necessarily mean swirleys in the bathroom. Cheer on the rise of the nerd kingdom as computer coders descend on North Charleston at the third annual Hackathon. What is a hackathon? We wondered the same thing — and no, it doesn’t have to do with hackey sack. Registered coders are challenged to create a new app in less than 24 hours. They build it, judges select the top 10, and then the audience gets to play with the app while the judges deliberate. Hackathon organizer Amanda Hodges says, “This competition is like the Olympic event of the IT industry ... We have 36 teams competing this year for $7,500 in cash and prizes.” There’ll be live music and DJs, food and booze, and a video game station to keep both the coders and the supporters entertained during the build. Hodges also asks spectators to register for the event so they have an idea of how many people to plan for.
