Some weekends we get the Sunday blues, and the only way to ease the pain of another work week is through a good meal. Luckily this Sunday, Chef BJ Dennis will take care of that for us. He’s cooking up a special Gullah Geechee dinner with cocktail pairings from Proof. “I am cooking these dishes to show off especially the seasonal fruit and veggies that are coming up right now,” Dennis says. “I’m also showcasing that this cuisine in its true essence is healthy and not overly heavy food, the way my granddaddy talked about eating when he was coming up.” The menu for Sunday includes fresh Atlantic tuna salad, boiled green peanuts, butterbean and artisan cherry tomatoes, West African style peanut stew turkey wings, vegetable stew, and banana bread. Craig Nelson from Proof will be concocting several drinks for the evening, including the Geechee cocktail. “It was invented by a Mr. Eddie Matthews, who was the bartender at the Mills House Hotel in the 1960s,” Dennis says. “He was a local African-American man who made up this concoction that was written up in a few national publications. We were given the OK by his family to put it out there for this dinner.”
