It’s all Greek to us at the 45th Annual Greek Festival — and we’d like to keep it that way. With authentic Greek food, Greek wine and beer, and live music and dancers, this three-day fest is bursting with fun. With a Charleston Greek community of about 300-400 families, the Greek Orthodox Church is a big part of the city’s local culture. Festival director Tom Meletis says the fest is full of energy, and he points to one aspect that he thinks is particularly special: the live music. “When you see George Antonopoulos on the bouzouki, it’s like Eric Clapton on the guitar. If he played guitar he’d be Jimi Hendrix. He’d probably be better,” says Meletis. Apparently you can look forward to Antonopoulos jumping on tables and swinging the bouzouki behind his back. Groovy. Wear your big-eatin’ pants, because when it comes to the food, this festival goes all out. Full chickens and lambs are cooked before festival-goers and servings are paired with dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with rice and meat), rice pilaf, greek salad, and bread. It doesn’t stop there. You can also taste Meletis’ favorite dish, mousaka — eggplant layered with beef, flavored with tomato and cheese, and topped with a cream sauce. There are plenty of Greek pastries to choose from, including a baklava sundae. Pair that with some wine-tasting from independent Greek vineyards and tell us if it gets any better.
