Grape Stomping Festival

When: Sat., Aug. 29, 2-6 p.m. 2009
Phone: (843) 559-6867
Price: $5/car

This Saturday, Irvin-House Vineyards, Charleston’s only domestic winery, hosts their annual Grape Stomping Festival. Bring your chairs and blankets to picnic on the lawn, enjoy the sounds of bluegrass band 17 South, munch on food from various vendors including J.B.’s Smokeshack, and naturally, indulge in Irvin~House’s muscadine wines by the bottle or the glass. You can also wander the vines and pick your own grapes for a dollar a pound, and of course there will be grape stomping. Yes, you get to stand in a wooden bucket and pop grapes between your toes for fun, but never fear— Irvin~House promises they “don’t use that wine.” There will even be a Lucy look-alike contest in honor of the infamous I Love Lucy grape-stomping episode. Irvin~House is also home to the Firefly distillery, and bottles of that nectar will be for sale after the festival. But as much as we all love Firefly, the focus of this event is on the wine. Look for a Firefly party at the vineyard in October. —Liz Kulze
