Rock on y'all

Girls Rock Charleston (GRC) presents their musical showcase this weekend, a final show celebrating the culmination of practices from their fall after-school program. In case you didn’t know, GRC is an empowering program for girls and transgender youth ages nine-17 that teaches self confidence, leadership, and music as a form of communication. Program Director Micah Blaise says, “During the program, artistic and academic mentors build lasting relationships with the youth and work with them to develop their leadership and organizing skills. Throughout the semester, youth build these skills by collaborating on musical and artistic projects; planning, promoting, and executing community events; and taking action on issues that matter to them and their communities.” GRC provides all instruments and welcomes students ranging from no musical experience to expert artists. “A major portion of their learning takes place in their bands. Teens with varying degrees of musical experience worked together throughout the semester to form bands and write several original songs,” says Blaise. The cost of admission is a donation to the program between $5-15 or a bulk snack item to be used for next semester’s program.
