Girls Rock Charleston Showcase

When: Sat., May 3 2014
Price: $5-$10
It’s like School of Rock but the girl band edition. And we know Mr. Schneebly would be proud. The young ladies from the Girls Rock After-School Program have been working diligently for 12 weeks to bring you some fine-tuned rock ‘n’ roll music. “We have four bands comprised of musicians from every corner of Charleston who have written songs covering subject matter from hashtags to heartbreak to changing the world,” says Jenna Lyles, a Girls Rock founder and a City Paper contributor. The after-school program aims to promote self esteem, leadership, and creativity in girls aged 13-17, all while jamming hard. Between algebra homework and volleyball practice, these girls have attended various workshops, endured instrument instruction, and dedicated long hours to band practice. All their hard work will be highlighted when the three bands — Light Year, #23, Unfiltered Sound, and The Passive Aggressors — take to the Pour House stage on Saturday. And the first 20 concert-goers will receive a top-secret door prize. If that’s not enough incentive, there’s also a free frozen dessert from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. “I mean, how often do you get to see a 15-year-old totally shredding the bass? Or a band of kids who only met each other three months ago get the crowd scramming for more? There’s no where else in Charleston where you can see what happens at the Girls Rock showcase. We guarantee,” Lyles says
