With national and personal debt mounting, constant fighting over immigration, and terrible dance moves inspired by ringtone music, I wouldn’t mind a trip back in time to a simpler decade. Thankfully, Theatre Charleston provides time travel in the form of their second annual Gin and Jazz: A Roaring Twenties Party. The event will put you in 1920s America, a time of economic prosperity, the Immigration Act of 1924 (the Tea Party’s wet dream), and the birth of jazz. A time when Charlie Chaplin was comedy’s king, pole-sitting was a test of will power, not an inappropriate epithet, and, most importantly, Yahtzee was created. As part of the theme, patrons are encouraged to don their best bob haircuts and flapper dresses and dance the Charleston to live music by the Jazz Artists of Charleston. Enjoy an open bar with classic cocktails from the Gin Joint without the threat of Prohibition. Celebrate the opening of the Charleston theater season by rubbing elbows with local actors, producers, and directors. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed and best dancers. All proceeds from the event go to benefit the nonprofit League of Charleston Theatres.
