Garage Cuban Band, Grupo de Suelo

When: Sun., Oct. 10 2010
Price: $10
The feisty Garage Cuban Band will perform a variety of old classics and new reworkings at the Pour House this Sunday. Guitarist Bill Carson, bassist Jonathan Gray, keyboardist Nathan Koci, and drummers Jack Burg and Ron Wiltrout perform what they call “a distinctive interpretation of Cuban music as it might be heard in a back alley, busy street, or dusty garage of the island nation” on electric and acoustic guitars, double-bass, traditional percussion, a Casiotone, and a trebly, antique loudspeaker. “The set will be typical for us — mostly classic Cuban songs, rumba, and boleros, played the way we do,” says Carson. “El Bohio will be serving up the goodies and fixings from a pig roast on the deck.” El Grupo de Suelo de San Luis Potosi, a traditional, accordion-driven, norteño style ensemble, perform on the deck at 6 p.m. Comprised mostly of brothers, the special opening act has been based on Johns Island for years. This show is their first performance at a rock venue. “I met Grupo de Suelo through extended family of theirs at a taco truck last year,” Carson says. “They are a great group of dedicated guys — a pleasure to listen to and hang out with. It promises to be a good time.” —T. Ballard Lesemann
