Flights to Paris are expensive, and our attempts to learn French have been largely thwarted by the language’s affinity for silent vowels. Although we don’t see a trip to France in our near future, the Alliance Française of Charleston has arranged for the next best thing when they screen five French films for cheap. “I try to find films that aren’t distributed in this country, because if people can see them on Netflix, then it’s nothing special,” says Josette Sharwell, French Film Festival co-chair. Friday’s film is Avis de Mistral, a light family drama about the clash of generations that occurs when three children visit their grandfather on holiday. Saturday at 1:30 p.m. catch a showing of Paris a Tout Prix, which follows the story of a Moroccan fashion designer in Paris who is suddenly deported and forced to reunite with her family in Morocco. En Solitaire will follow at 3:30 p.m., telling the tale of a sailor determined to win an international sailing competition. That night watch the equestrian drama Jappeloup, chronicling the story of jockey Pierre Durand Jr. and his horse Jappeloup at the Olympics in 1984 and 1988. Sunday’s film, Le Jour des Corneilles, is an animated fantasy about a boy living in the forest with his father and is free for accompanied children under 10. Enjoy some French cheeses and desserts at the free reception on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the MUSC Basic Science Building at 173 Ashley Ave
