CP understands that books and supplies needed for the new school year can get pretty expensive, so you should take advantage of any freebies you can. Plus, these events give you an excuse to party before it's time to crack down.

MONDAY. The Groovy Cools, a local pop-rock band, reunite at Art’s Bar & Grill. Find vocalist/bassist Jim Orr, guitarist Keith Bradshaw (from Plane Jane), and drummer Jonathan Jackson jamming with special guests at the local spot at 10 p.m.

TUESDAY. Get back to your country roots with Homemade Wine, an Americana band from Knoxville, Tenn. The combo will be rockin’ The Windjammer stage beginning at 9 p.m.

WEDNESDAY. Enjoy the last days of summer before school starts with the Town of Mt. Pleasant Splash Day. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. This week, the Starlight Cinema presents Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie begins at 9 p.m. at the Freshfields Village and, while the show is free, donations are being accepted for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity.

THURSDAY. The Taashki Trunk Show features the emerging handbag designer’s fall collection. Find the unique menswear line of Bonobos at the Pop Up Shop at Cynthia Rowley from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enjoy a night of fabulous menswear, sweet tea bourbon, beer, and the Bluestone Ramblers.

FRIDAY. West Marine' Grand Opening celebration invites the public to join in on activities for the whole family. The excitement begins at 8 a.m. on Fri. and last through Sun. at 6 p.m.

SATURDAY. This Saturday is packed full of free events. An event for the whole family, Because of B.R.A.Y.D.E.N. Water Safety Day begins at 8 a.m. with 5K Awareness walk raising money for survival swimming lessons. The event is held at Gahagan Sports Complex and last until noon with activities, food, games, and information. Stay healthy with skin screenings at James Island County Park. Stop by between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and receive a screening from dermatologists on the MUSC Mobile Health Unit. The streets are growing a little hotter with 2011 Harley-Davidson Showcase. From 12 to 3 p.m. at the Lowcountry Harley-Davidson, find the new 2011 motorcycles and a fashion show featuring biker attire. The event includes lunch and there will be prizes given away. The Summer at St. John’s Concert Series continues this week with performances by La Belle Musique. The free concert is held at St. John’s Lutheran Church beginning at 6 p.m.

SUNDAY. Celebrate the the new school year at the First Day Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Liberty Square. The festival is a Charleston tradition, featuring information of educational services and programs, school supplies, and free food and beverages.
