Freeloaders: Book signings, art strolling, and Independence Day 

The week's best free events

Save your money for an Independence Day celebration. Enjoy freebies all week leading up to the big summer holiday with live music, art shows, movies, and more.

MONDAY. The Off the Grid series is moving to Monday evenings. This week features Boston blues band Ten Foot Polecats with special guest Jeff Norwood from 6-7:30 p.m. at Charleston County Public Library. Garland Weeks unveils his portrait sculpture Honorable in honor of Mayor Berlin G. Myers at the Summerville Municipal Complex at 7 p.m. The celebration of Carolina Day is held at Fort Moultrie from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; activities include musket firing demonstrations, period medical displays, children’s programs, and a band concert.

TUESDAY. You'll have another chance to hear Carolina blues singer/guitarist Jeff Norwood at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ on Sullivan’s. Norwood shares the stage with Ten Foot Polecats, a punk/blues band from Mississippi. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Premier Party begins at 3 p.m. at the Mellow Mushroom in Mt. Pleasant. While the midnight showing of the movie is not free to all, anyone can enjoy and partake in the pre-show activities.

WEDNESDAY. The Pour House holds a free show starting at 6 p.m. with local Dead Tribute band Reckoning rockin’ the deck followed by the Austin, Texas-based Southern rock band, Wisebird, on the main stage. The Starlight Cinema Series continues with a showing of Up. Enjoy the free outdoor screening beginning at 9 p.m. in the Freshfields Village. J.J. Caillier & The Zydeco Knockout play a free show Kiawah’s Night Heron Park at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday. Blue Bicycle Books welcomes Jason Deierlein. The first 50 people to the launch party at 5 p.m. will receive a free signed copy of the local author's new book, Return From a Comatose Mind. At 7 p.m., Barnes & Noble host Jane Green's book signing promoting the best-selling author's new novel, Promises to Keep.

FRIDAY. Head to Gallery Row for an art stroll from 5-8 p.m. View Low Country Impressions, a collection of recent painting by Ginny Versteegen at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, and other new works at the Broad Street galleries. The Fairy God Muthas play a free show at Drop In Gourmet Deli and Bar at 10 p.m.

SATURDAY. Rob Fowler’s Mustache Art Show begins at 8 p.m. and features the artwork of Phillip Hyman, tattoo artist Lindsey Hanniford, painter Christina Rodino, photographer Jason Layne, painter Tim Showers, and mustache prosthetist Kelly Latta along with other artists. Stick around the Upper Deck Tavern for a “Best Mustache Contest” that will take place at 10 p.m.

SUNDAY. There's a ton of Fourth of July events around town, like the one in North Charleston at Riverfront Park from 3-10 p.m. Children's activities include an inflatable jump castles, games, giant sandbox, and the water fountain.
