Freedom Rides On: A Tribute to the Freedom Riders

When: Mon., Jan. 21, 5 p.m. 2013
Price: Free, donations accepted
This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, you can celebrate Dr. King at a church where he once preached, Morris Street Baptist Church, during a tribute concert for the Freedom Riders by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the CSO Spiritual Ensemble. The Freedom Riders were a group of black and white civil rights activists who braved the violence and prejudice of the 1960s South to help desegregate schools and register black voters. The performance will include both visual presentations and classical selections, with narration by Dr. Karen Chandler of the College of Charleston.“The Ensemble looks forward to sharing choral works that highlight the courageous activism of the Freedom Riders and their extraordinary contribution to civil rights,” says Lee Pringle, president of the CSO Spiritual Ensemble. Tickets can be picked up at the Charleston County Public Library’s Main Branch on Calhoun Street.
