Free Admission at the Gibbes

When: Sun., July 14, 1-5 p.m. 2013
Phone: (843) 722-2706
Price: Free

The idea of closing King Street to cars for Second Sunday is nice, but it can be crowded and a little steamy in the summer. The Gibbes Museum of Art wants to help alleviate those summertime Second Sunday woes by waiving their admission. Pass the afternoon with air conditioning and artwork, including three featured exhibits: The Spoleto Watercolors of Stephen Mueller and Carl Palazzolo, The Rice Plantation Series: Watercolors by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, and People’s Choice: a Community-Curated Exhibition. The latter is the result of community-wide voting that took place in March, which Amy Mercer of the Gibbes says yielded over 3,000 votes for people’s favorite pieces from their permanent collection. “We were thrilled to have had such enthusiastic input from our community,” says Mercer, who looks forward to the thrice-annual free admission days as opportunities to give back to the community. After this weekend, the next free admission day isn’t until October 13.
