Follypalooza 2010

When: Sat., Oct. 23 2010
Price: Free
The annual Follypalooza music festival and cancer benefit returns to Center Street on Folly Beach this Saturday. The third installment promises to be an afternoon of cool tunes and family-friendly activities. Headlining the festival this year is blues singer/guitarist Big Bill Morganfield, son of late blues legend Muddy Waters. Originally working as a teacher with degrees in English and communication, it wasn’t until the death of his father that Morganfield took great interest in the guitar. He released his first album, Nineteen Years Old: A Tribute to Muddy Waters, in 1997. The subsequent album Rising Son gained both commercial and critical acclaim, winning Morganfield the W.C. Handy Best New Blues Artist award. The songwriter brings his traditional blues to the Edge of America with a set of both his own and his father’s work. A selection of local bands will entertain before Morganfield takes the stage. Other acts include Fat Alice, Po’Ridge, Kevin Church, Ryan Bonner & The Dearly Beloved, Head Rush, Whiskey & Ramblin, Calhoun’s Calling, The Tips, and Folly Beach native Hank “The Pirate” Marley (doing a kids’ show at 11 a.m.). The street will be closed off from noon to 6 p.m. It’ll be a full day of fun. —Jansen Cumbie
