What If? Productions’ Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche premiered last year during Piccolo Spoleto 2012, and the show was so popular — in fact, it brought down the house — that What If? is giving audiences a chance to take seconds this December. In What If’s typically cheeky fashion, they’ve made Five Lesbians their holiday play, slightly adapting the original to help get you in the Christmas spirit. The play takes place in the 1950s during the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein’s annual quiche breakfast, when suddenly nuclear war is declared. The ladies are left to do whatever they can to help ensure the survival of the human race. The story originated in Chicago, and What If? was the first theater outside the Windy City to pick it up. Since then, it’s made the rounds of several other theater companies along the East Coast. “When we produced it here in Charleston, a few other regional theaters picked up the show after seeing our production. It inspired other theaters we have worked with to pick it up as well,” says What If? artistic director Kyle Barnette. “Now the play is represented by the massive theater publishing house Samuel French. So the show has come full circle, and we are excited to present it one last time for a good long holiday run.” Attend opening night to enjoy a bake sale, cake walk, and spiked eggnog before the show.
