First Day Festival

When: Sun., Aug. 14, 1-4 p.m. 2011
The first day of school is always exciting. You get to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and wear your first day outfit, a tie-dyed shirt, jean shorts, and jellies (that’s cool right?). The first day is an opportunity to start the year off on the right foot and get into a comfortable and healthy groove. The First Day Festival is meant to stress the importance of the first day of school and show kids how best to kick off the new school year. The free event at the Aquarium and Maritime Center includes education exhibits, school supplies, music, free boat rides, and a much-needed misting station. As part of the festival’s focus on good eating habits, local chefs will be on hand teaching kids how to eat well and cook healthy meals. Visitors are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the Lowcountry Food Bank. The festival also hopes to encourage parents to play a large role in their child’s education and throughout the school year. The first day of school for the Charleston County School District is Aug. 16.
