First Annual Charleston Pirate Festival

Phone: (843) 727-2165

Pirates are commandeering Charleston for an afternoon, and they have some swarthy shenanigans up their puffy sleeves. Fearsome buccaneers Blackbeard, Anne Bonney, and Mary Read will be at the Maritime Center for meet-and-greet photo ops to kick off the day. The family-oriented fest includes a chance to not only meet the back-from-the-dead buccaneers, but to learn about their lives and their history associated with Charleston. There will be a pirate story-telling session, a musket demo, and a “Golden Age of Piracy” lecture to entertain and educate landlubbing attendees. There will also be tables and displays of pirate weapons, artwork, and artifacts from local museums and organizations like the S.C. Historical Society and Powder Magazine. The fest will take place both inside and outside the Maritime Center, utilizing green space for a “Paint a Pirate” opportunity and the upstairs conference room for most of the main events. “We wanted to do something fun for the family before kids go back to school,” says Mike Coker, Operations Assistant at the Old Exchange Building. “We are starting small this year but hope to make it an annual event and expand it, leading up to 2018, which will be the 300th anniversary of Blackbeard’s Charleston blockade and the execution of Stede Bonnet.”
