Honing the ability to scarf ice cream with swift, sure strokes does not often fit into the training regimen of a competitive bicycle racer, but it just may pay off for those entering the Creative Spark Amazing Race. The ability to think on your feet and piece together puzzles regardless of how obscure the clues are will help as well.

"The emphasis is more on the amazing than on the race," says Creative Spark executive director Carol Antman. "We want people to just come out and have fun."

The fund-raising event for Creative Spark Center for the Arts, now in its second year, sets teams of four bicyclists loose on the trails of Daniel Island in search of clues. The teams have three hours to finish and, 11 times along the way, will have to stop and complete a task in order to receive the next clue.

"The tasks might be anything from eating ice cream to building sculptures out of newspaper or identifying birds," Antman adds. "We don't want to reveal too much because the surprises are part of the fun. And there will be plenty of surprises."

Thirty-five teams competed in last year's event and an even larger turnout is expected this time around. "We started small last year and that was fine," she adds. "This year, we are ready to bust out!"

Participants should bring their bicycle helmets, bottled water, and good sportsmanship. A hospitality tent hosted by Moe's Southwest Grill will be waiting at Blackbaud Stadium for the ravenous racers as they rush toward the finish line, plus prizes courtesy of The Bicycle Shoppe.

The Sat. April 28 event will be followed by an evening of Charleston Battery soccer (admission is included as part of race registration). The match, against the Montreal Impact, starts at 7:30 p.m.

Speaking of Charleston Battery soccer, their 15th season began last Friday with a home opener against the Minnesota Thunder that drew over 4,500 fans and ended in a 0-0 tie.

An active preseason chock-full of scrimmages has the Battery ready for action in the USL First Division. The team placed third in regular season play in 2006, making it to the semifinals in playoffs. With new additions to the team including recently signed veteran striker Byron Alvarez, formerly of the Portland Timbers, and rookie defender Lee Sandwina, the hope is for even bigger and better things for the yellow and the black this time around. The Battery's even added a dance troupe, the aptly-named Bombshells, to keep the energy high this season.
