I took the press conference at face value, just what they said it was: a public statement to avoid violence (although conceding that self-defense, is still on the table) at a time when emotions are running high, and an invitation to each other to debate the merits of what each claim is an idea that's clear as a bell, i.e. that the confederate flag is a symbol of heritage/hate. I don't believe most of us have ever had the opportunity to witness an actual debate, live, by two such opposing sides. I for one, think it will be hugely valuable, if they can pull it off. Perhaps the gesture does play into the unfortunate role that Southern Blacks have had to play in placating White fears, despite enduring centuries of righteous anger over racism. But, as MLK believed, nothing comes of violence and hatred. Let's give peace a chance.
