The Congo, like much of Africa, is riddled with a history of atrocious violence. As this is being written, children are being kidnapped and forced to fight in what has been labeled the world’s deadliest war. Those not large enough to hold an AK-47 are outfitted with a whistle and sent to the front lines, impelled to blow loudly as a distraction to enemy forces. This is where Falling Whistles, a Los Angeles-based philanthropic organization, gets its name. This fall, they have taken their effort for peace on the road, and they’ll make a stop in Charleston for a benefit event at Rogue Wave Surf Shop. At the event, different styles of Falling Whistle’s whistle necklaces will be available for purchase, with a majority of the proceeds going toward Congolese relief efforts. Rhett Boyd Jr., owner of Rogue Wave, says the goal of the event is to help spread awareness of what’s happening in the Congo. “By selling something that’s almost a symbol of warfare, we can turn it into a symbol of peace,” Boyd says.
