Price: $25-$40

A melting pot of music
The Brazilian vocalist and composer arrives with a pile of authentic Afro-Brazilian traditionals and a few modern twists. On her latest album, the 15-song Quando o Céu Clarear (Brazilmusica), she and her band explore more than sambas and folk tunes — they weave a textured variety of international music.

She thrives as a musical interpreter, too
One of Cozza's most creative sparks is in the reworking of vintage and traditional pieces, reshaping something familiar with her own polish and personality coming through. On Quando o Céu Clarear, she puts her spin on tracks originally penned by Roque Ferreira, Leandro Medina, and other Brazilian and Cuban composers.

This is Cozza's Charleston debut
Cozza is considered one of the great revelations of the São Paulo scene. In addition to her solo work, she regularly performs with the Mantiqueira Band, Leny Andrade, Ceumar Jazz Symphonic Orchestra, and other artists. Critics and fans love the organic, flexible quality of Cozza's voice — as well as her colorful onstage personality. The vocalist has toured extensively in Europe and Asia, but her North American appearances have been limited. Backed by a skillful quartet handling cavaquinho, guitar, bass, and percussion, this should be one of the more exhilarating gigs of the Wachovia Jazz Series.
