Eye Level Art and Cinebarre embrace outdoor cinema

Take it outside!

Both Eye Level Art and Cinebarre are hopping on the outdoor movie bandwagon (after City Paper’s trailblazing springtime Movies in the Square series, we’ll humbly point out).

Eye Level Art launches Summer Movies on the Green, on Tues. July 21 with Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. The gallery’s series includes cult classics, vintage favorites, local features, and indie flicks. Beer, wine, and food are available for purchase, or you can bring your own booze for a $5 corking fee. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the movie starts as night falls. Should rain decide to intrude on the revelry, no worries; there’s plenty of room indoors for the movie. If you’re not familiar with North by Northwest we’ll give you a quick rundown of some highlights: Cary Grant, spies, a hot chick, and an iconic corn field chase scene. The plot isn’t so bad, either. Basically, Grant’s character is mistaken for a CIA agent and later is alleged to have committed murder — we can’t do the story as much justice as Hitchcock does, but trust us here. Tickets are $5, and you can reserve them by calling Eye Level Art at (843) 425-3576 or simply show up and buy them the night of the show.

Also now on location is the mobile branch of Cinebarre, consisting of a fully-equipped “projection room on wheels” and an enormous inflatable outdoor movie screen. And with the impressive turn-out they had on June 30 during the Public Enemies premiere (150 people), this is the place to be for movie buffs this summer. Bring your chairs and blankets to Cinebarre’s outdoor amphitheater on July 9 for the midnight premiere of Bruno, starring Sascha Barron Cohen. And if you’re a tech nerd like myself, you’ll probably want to see the movie screen inflate, so get there at 11:50 or earlier. Although they won’t be offering a full menu like they do indoors, hot popcorn will be available and a beer trailer will be serving for the duration of the premiere ($5/cup).

Also keep a heads up for the July 14 outdoor premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with a cook-out pre-party starting at 10 p.m. (complete with a DJ, butterbeer, elf wine, treacle tarts, and scar tats). Don’t be afraid to wear costumes. Tickets are $10.
