I agree it is somewhat inconsistent that zombie's sense of smell went extremely dull this time around. Well, excuse one I will give is there were enough dead or walking corpses around to cover the living's scent, and another excuse is Rock and Glen were moving in plain sight trying to blend in as zombies in episode 2 "Gut" but this time around zombies got no sight to track them. Honestly I think giving the circumstance hiding under cars probably is the only sensible choice then running to the wood drawing attention of a large herd of hungry ghouls.

As for the character development, I've read the first 40 odd comic book issues so I know they are doing a decent job prepping the characters (nod on Andrea and guns) to what lies ahead, I disagree with you completely on that. I think the show so far is stronger than its original comic book materials, and will continue to watch to see it gets better or worse.
