Eastern Surfing Association Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championship

When: April 24-27 2014
Phone: (302) 988-1953
“It’s probably one of the largest surfing events the South Carolina coast has ever hosted,” says Marshall DePass, an event director for the Eastern Surfing Association’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championship. The competition brings more than 260 surfers to Folly to compete for their spot at the Easterns, the championship for the Eastern Surfing Association held in September in Nags Head, N.C. To get there, surfers must first compete at the regional competition when it returns to Folly — last time it was held here was in 2006 — but they’ve moved from the Washout to just in front of the Tides. DePass and his co-director Nancy Hussey have been busy planning to make sure the competition goes smoothly, and with 25 divisions that include surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and bodyboarding, that means a lot of planning. The surfing starts early Thursday morning and will go all day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with the competition winding down around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Contestants range from kids to adults, teams to solo. And if you get hungry on Saturday, barbecue man Jamie Westendorff will be serving up some of his eats on the beach. The grub will be free for competitors but requires a donation for spectators. For a full schedule, visit surfesa.org.
