Early Bird Blues w/ Jeff Norwood

When: Thu., May 28, 4 p.m. 2009
Price: $10
Camden-based singer/guitarist Jeff Norwood plays old Delta blues and rock standards and some slide-guitar songs during happy hourfrom 4-7 p.m. Norwood is clearly a seasoned live performer, and his songs range from crunchy guitar-riffed blues to boogie-woogie. He recorded his latest album, Awendaw, at the studio at Awendaw Green last fall. Part of Piccolo Spoleto's Blues & Jazz series.

The Buzz:

WHAT IS IT? A few months after the annual Lowcountry Blues Bash, the S.C. performers return to Charleston for an encore series of Early Bird Blues performances at Piccolo Spoleto. Mad River Bar & Grille hosts the evening gatherings, providing a relaxed, spacious atmosphere to enjoy the best of the state’s blues performers and a few acts from afar.

WHY SEE IT? The 76-year-old Drink Small, a Carolina blues legend, performs twice (May 22 and June 5). Columbia’s Jeff Norwood plays on the strength of his new acoustic release, Awendaw. And Blues Thunder from Down Under Geoff Achison returns from Australia.

WHO SHOULD GO? The happy hour slot means these blues are accessible to everyone. Aficionados and those in need of a post-work respite will enjoy the talented daily offerings. (3 hours) (Stratton Lawrence)
