If you caught our recent Best of Charleston issue, then you know Dusty Slay was named Best Local Comic by our readers. Now that his monthly show has rolled around, this is a good chance to see what all the fuss is about (if you don’t already know). The showcase features different comics every month, and this time, the lucky funnymen are Justin Thompson, Jeremy McClellan, Neil Bansil, and Jon Ballard. These guys weren’t picked by accident — Slay thinks they’re the bee’s knees. “These guys are all really good in their own way, and they’ve been selected from their outstanding performances at the weekly open mic night,” says Slay. “I picked these guys because I think they’re absolutely the best.” They all have their own distinctive flair. Thompson is a Greenville native, and he’s the first ever out-of-towner to be featured in the show. McClellan is brand spankin’ new, as this will be his very first performance outside of open mic. Bansil is a popular local comic who’s appeared in the Charleston Comedy Festival a few times. Ballard is a member of Theatre 99 and Slay says he’s a family man — he makes a lot of jokes about parenthood and all it entails. Naturally, Slay is a big fan of Charleston comedy. “People of Charleston may not realize how great our comedy scene is around here,” says Slay. “This is a show worth seeing. Why not? It’s the cost of a movie ticket with original, live entertainment.” And it’s all happening at Theatre 99, another Best of Charleston winner (Best Local Theater).
