Donavon Frankenreiter w/ Seth Pettersen Staff Pick

When: Mon., July 25 2011
Price: $20, $15 (adv.)
Don’t be surprised by the similarly sunny laid-back vibe shared by Donavon Frankenreiter and his buddy Jack Johnson; it’s undoubtedly an outgrowth of their teenage pro surfer backgrounds. (Apparently it’s impossible to be too troubled when you spend your youth on a beach.) Mining more of a hippy vibe than Johnson as Frankenreiter’s breathy, light-footed tenor skips lightly over strummy, Cali-inflected folk-pop. His lyrics overflow with carefree sentiments like “It Don’t Matter,” “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching,” and “Life, Love, and Laughter,” which capsulizes his ethos: “Don’t look back, it won’t do any good. Don’t look ahead, you’ll just be misunderstood. Everything you need could be right in front of you.” Fortunately, Frankenreiter mostly manages to sidestep the hippy-dippy innocence suggested by his earnest optimism and big-hearted spirit. Though he champions positivity, he acknowledges the difficulty to maintain it. It’s a clear-eyed attitude abetted by mounting musical maturity. Soul and jammy blues are big part of his easy-going beach pop, and Frankenreiter’s feel for hooks has increased across his five full-length releases. He even explored indigenous Hawaiian sounds on last year’s Revisited, which employs ukulele and slack-key guitar. While a naïfish element persists, the charismatic Frankenreiter is truly capable of making you believe it is as simple as “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” His brand-new collection is titled Glow.
