Dinner with a side of divorce. There's the divorce of a husband and wife, and then there's the divorce between friends. This play by Donald Margulies explores both kinds, with their own particular betrayals and messes.

Breaking up is hard to do. The play centers on two couples, Karen and Gabe and Tom and Beth. Over dinner, Beth tells Karen and Gabe that Tom is having an affair and they are getting a divorce. The meat of the play, however, is how the divorce affects Karen and Gabe. As The New York Times put it, "What initially seemed a rather conventional glimpse at the perils of breaking up becomes an original examination of the terrors of staying together."

Creative space. As one City Paper reviewer noted, Threshold makes excellent use of its small-seeming space with alley staging for this show, maintaining intimacy without pushing the audience on top of the action. Kudos to scenic designer Mike Kordek for taking the nuances of the play and translating them into the physical space.
