Re: “Leonard Pitts Blasts the Neo-Confederates

1. Virginia did not secede per se to protect slavery. She seceded when Lincoln ordered her to send troops to suppress her neighbors who had seceded.
2.Secession at the time was not high treason as Pitts states. There was not then nor is there anything now in the Constitution that prevented any state from seceding. It was not until a Supreme Court decision in 1865 that secession was made unconstitutional. See Oyez Website
3.Mosby is one of my heroes but on this issue he was wrong. Just because he was a hero does not make everything he says correct. I can equally quote Armisted and Pickett as they led their men off on the third day at Gettysburg and slavery preservation WAS not in their speech.
4.African Americans seem to take great offense when anyone says the war was not fought totally for them. After 1862 abolition was indeed a prime driver but prior to that time Lincoln was solely justifying the war on preservation of the Union, but he needed an emotional boost for the country in 1862, the war was going terribly. So he issued the famous proclamation which did nothing to free slaves in states like Kentucky or Maryland. It was for Lincoln what WMD was like for Bush in Iraq.
5.Pitts needs to read the American Civil War by Bruce Catton and you see a whole host of reasons for secession. Slavery was the most divisive to be sure but the war would have happened even if slavery did not exist. It was in the last analysis a war between two competing ways of life and one can readily see how the South may have felt when one looks at how Health Care was recently done, same type of issue.
6.Everything I have ever read from Pitts convinces me that if he were in a line say at McDonalds and they ran out of whatever it was he wanted, it would be some type of racial conspiracy. He condemns the South for not letting go when African Americans continue in some quarters with help like Pitts and Sharpton to continue to grieve over slavery. For heaven's sake we now have an Afro American President. I am not saying that all is well race wise in America, but Pitts needs to help folks get over it. While he decries the governor for redoing his proclamation, I decry the governor for feeling he had to redo it. He owed that to no one.
