We’re a sucker for behind-the-scenes tell-alls — we miss True Hollywood Stories more than we care to admit. And on Wednesday, Charleston will have its own version of the E! series when playwright and stand-up comedian Del Shores stops by the American Theater for a fundraising performance of his latest show My Sordid Best. “We reached out to Del after I saw he was doing his one man show Del Shores: My Sordid Best at a theater in Memphis I used to work with,” says Kyle Barnette, producing artistic director at What If? “Since we had already selected his show for our fifth season, we thought what if we asked him to come and do his show as a fundraiser during our run of Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Park Housewife? He said ‘yes’ and that is how it happened.” My Sordid Best chronicles Shores’ exploits in Hollywood as a writer and director, and he’ll also talk about the real life inspirations behind some of his most famous characters. “It’s sort of a like a stand-up comedy, confessional, and theater performance all wrapped into one. He is uncensored and does not hold back on any subject. It is not for the kiddies,” Barnette adds. Shores told City Paper last week that, “Any time I do a show at a theater, I look at the play [being staged] again, and I talk about anything that influenced the story there,” so except some dirt on what influenced Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Park Housewife, which runs through Dec. 20 at Threshold Repertory Theatre (84 1/2 Society St.). Shores will also add in some other humorous anecdotes from his life. Shores has won awards from LA Weekly Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, NAACP Theatre Awards, and the LA Drama Critics Circle Awards. He’s also worked on TV shows Dharma and Greg and Queer as Folk, plus writing his own plays, including Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got the Will? The event will benefit What If? Productions.
