Want the satisfaction and emo-cred that comes with reading poetry in front of a large crowd but don’t quite have the chops to actually write great stuff? Luckily for you, the Dead Poets Tour is coming to Charleston, and you can read works from your favorite dead South Carolina poet at the East Bay Meeting House. And even though you’re not reading your own artistic creation, you still get to be filmed for the Dead Poets Grand Tour 2010. The event, sponsored by the S.C. Poetry Society, the Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts (LILA), and Lowcountry Poetry Lovers, is just one stop on the 34-day, 13-state tour put on by the Dead Poets Society of America to honor our country’s dead poets. Death and poetry go hand in hand; poets write about death, and some of them, including Edgar Allen Poe, don’t even become popular until after their deaths. Maybe this tour will make it up to him. S.C.’s own poet laureate Marjory Wentworth, who, we might add, is very much alive, is in charge of Thursday’s bash and also expects several living S.C. poets to drop in. Potential readers just need to show up at 6 p.m. to sign up for a slot. —Cameron Jones
