It was a different time. People were uneducated and stubborn. I believe that through time slavery would have dissipated either way. However, that's my biased opinion.
What's NOT a biased opinion, is that The Union wanted power to the gov., while The Confederacy wanted power to the people. In the long run, the war was more about Industry and Currency, rather than the exaggerated cruelty of slavery..

Those with position can really twist the big picture and easily fool a downtrodden people. Hell, look where we are today in America. If they use television to dumb us down and subliminal messaging to manipulate us, what else do you think they're scheming behind their stiff suits and ties?! Kittens and sunshine??
