Tiny worlds

This week the Halsey Institute screens Curious Worlds: The Art and Imagination of David Beck, a documentary about sculptor and miniature architect David Beck. Beck creates small-scale works of art, incorporating sculptures within his sculptures and crafting tiny windows to allow viewers to look in on a private scene. Beck tends to focus on certain themes and creatures in particular. “I’m drawn to the fish and insects because they seem so ‘other’ to me,” he says. “I find them strange and wonderful. Their movements either swimming or flying are so graceful as to be so very unearthly. What the animal seems to perform so effortlessly requires a plethora of cogs, wires, and cranks.” The film’s creator, Olympia Stone, will be present for a Q&A after the show.
