The John Ancrum SPCA hosts its eighth annual Celebrity Chili Cook-Off and silent auction to benefit homeless animals. Local celebrities compete for best chili bragging rights so that stray and abandoned animals can get a new chance at life. This year, sample the culinary delights of past winners like Charleston County Council Chairman Tim Scott and Councilwoman Colleen Condon. Channel 2’s anchor Brad Franko and Sports Director Brendan Clark will also be tempting your palate with their chili creations. Tanya, Brooke, and Steve from the 95SX’s Two Girls & a Guy will attempt to hold on to their titles as king and queens of chili. Celebrity judges Chef Frank Lee of Slightly North of Broad, Chef Bob Waggoner of Charleston Grill, and Chef Ciáran Duffy of Tristan will declare winners in categories like best presentation and most traditional. All proceeds benefit the programs of the JASPCA, which provides a safe haven for stray, abandoned, and abused animals. Price includes chili, beer, wine, and entertainment. —Madelyne Adams SATURDAY

Get in the holiday spirit in the grand style of the old South at Middleton Place. The 18th-century plantation offers an intimate candlelit holiday dinner in its restaurant overlooking the Rice Mill Pond. A warm fireplace and an elaborately decorated Christmas tree set the holiday tone for the Southern-themed dinner menu, heavily influenced by former consultant-in-residence chef Edna Lewis, the South’s answer to Julia Child. Start the evening with shellfish and grits, tomato napoleon, or a warm cup of she-crab soup. Entrée options include grilled pork tenderloin, duck breast, and herb-roasted lamb rack. After dinner, take the torch-lit path from the restaurant to the greenery-trimmed and candlelit House Museum to look back at Carolina Christmas customs of the 18th and 19th centuries with foundation interpreters. Henry Middleton, president of the First Continental Congress, built the House Museum as a guest house in 1755. Dinner prices depend on entrée choice.
