CSO Gospel Choir presents: Roots: A 10-Year Retrospective

Phone: (866) 811-4111

Ten years after. What did you do for your 10th birthday? Oh, you stuffed your face with cake and then threw a fit when you didn't get a SEGA Genesis? Loser. Well, the CSO Gospel Choir has figured out a better way to celebrate the big 1-0: They're throwing a party, and by party, we mean a concert featuring some of the gospel ensemble's holy-rolling favorites. The CSO Gospel Choir has performed in both London and Paris.

Can we get an amen? Music Director Sandra S. Barnhardt will lead the CSO Gospel Choir and Charleston International Festival of Choirs through such beloved classics as "Lord Help Me To Hold Out," "Order My Steps in Your Words," and "Amazing Grace," a spiritual classic with a tie to the Holy City.

The grace of God. The composer of that beloved tune, a non-believer named John Newton, attended services at what is now the Circular Congressional Church when the slave ship on which he served was docked in Charleston Harbor. Something inside his soul was moved. Newton later converted, renounced the slave trade, and joined the ministry.
