Contemporary Charleston 2009

When: June 14-16, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 2009
Phone: (888) 374-2656
Part of the Piccolo Spoleto Invitational Exhibitions. This exhibition, curated by Gallery Coordinator Erin Glaze, features the most recent work of five contemporary artists living and working in Charleston. Includes mixed media work by Jonathan Brilliant, Karin Olah, Dorothy Netherland, Ishmael and Benjamin Timpson. Audio/visual components accompany the artwork in this exhibit to give the viewer a deeper understanding of the exhibiting artist’s work being presented.

The Buzz:

WHAT IS IT? Five artists take over the spacious City Gallery at Waterfront Park. Jonathan Brilliant makes installations. Benjamin Timpson creates tiny compositions using found objects. Fabric artist Karin Olah weaves colorful abstractions. Dorothy Netherland paints on glass. And the mononymic abstract artist Ishmael gets back to his street-art roots.

WHY SEE IT? The gallery will give each artist his or her own niche, and you’ll be able to watch them create their art via dedicated video screens.

WHO SHOULD GO? Sick of seeing the same art names cropping up? Here’s your chance to catch some highly talented locals determinedly sticking to their aesthetic roots. (Nick Smith)
