Ballet is already a challenge, but it would take some serious skill to gracefully leap and twirl on stage while wearing a giant noggin-covering mask, like some of the folks in The Nutcracker. The classic ballet comes to the North Charleston Coliseum and PAC. With such a heavy presence in popular culture, The Nutcracker is arguably the most recognized ballet of all time. The two-act ballet contains world-renowned musical arrangements and tells the tale of Clara’s special Christmas toy that transports her into a magical land filled with Sugarplum fairies and dancing snowflakes. The Columbia City Ballet puts their own special spin on the dance — you probably haven’t seen Scarlett O’Hara in any other Nutcracker performances before. Local children, ages four to 18 will share the stage with the company’s professional dancers. “I really went with the humor this year and an ode to beautiful classical dancing,” says director William Starrett. There will be an encore presentation at the Sottile Theatre (44 George St.) Tues. Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.
