Re: “Let's not let Charleston become Myrtle Beach

If you think motorcycles are a problem-look at the fatal kite flying accidents in ONE festival.

Re: “Let's not let Charleston become Myrtle Beach

Out BICYCLE riding the other day-I decided to note the first traffic noises and then see what was creating the noise. TIRE noise from cars was #1 and detectable BEFORE loud piped motorcycles, (timed by counting the time between the first sound of the vehicle and the arrival of the vehicle)as were semitrucks-especially their "jake brakes". Mtorcycles were the least "first heard" even with the louder pipes. #1 Jake brakes-#2 tire noises #3 motorcycles. Tire noise was the most frequent (obviously)as all trucks and cars have tires, MC tires less noticble.

jamesisland-.There is just as much scientific evidence-NONE, that loud pipes DON'T save lives-I have seen it work myself, but again if people just rap the pipes all the time-it won't make a difference. No studies are available to prove loud pipes DON'T save lives or DO save lives-I know from my own many experiences that they have stopped drivers from pulling out as they spin their heads towards me as they are pulling out, when I rap, they stop surprised. This has been witnessed enough times for my husband to buy loud pipes himself. It is foolish to assume it will always work, which may be why some people are against it-so others don't make fatal assumptions. It works for me, but I don't make noise for it's own sake-only when someone needs to pay attention. It is rude (to me) t just be noisy because you can-just as it's rude to hoot and howl from the back of pick-ups or have boom cars blaring all the time. Beside making noise all the time eventually causes it to lose it's effectiveness as it gets tuned out over time.

Re: “Let's not let Charleston become Myrtle Beach

James-about loud pipes. I have loud pipes (I don't rap them except when a driver is not looking both ways, happens more often than you think)Several times, my horn which is almost as loud as a car's (thinking of getting an air horn which is louder than pipes and regular horns. THAT should be interesting)failed to get their attention and the pipes were the only thing that got the driver to look to the left. My husband is getting loud pipes because he has seen hoe many accidents were averted by my diligence and pipes. I NEVER make noise just to make noise. That not only trains people to tune out the pipes, but reduces engine life and just isn't necessary.
Just having loud pipes themselves don't stop accidents, it is the rapping of the pipes at an impending accident that saves lives and ONLY if they aren't constantly being rapped so they are just another backround noise. There is just as much scientific evidence-none, that loud pipes DON'T save lives-I have seen it work myself, but again if people just rap the pipes all the time-it won't make a difference. SO-rap when you have to, otherwise hold it down!

You said:""Now, I am not saying that all bikers are violent, but the image is there and it is well earned and even celebrated in some quarters. And if you don't believe there is a violent subtext to biker culture, check out the letters to the editor next week in response to this column."" The image is there to those not "in the know", and are you HOPING for a threat, like to "prove" your point? Are you really a frustrated biker?
