Coastal Expeditions and Center for Birds of Prey host a Bull Island adventure

Surf and Safari

In a match made in heaven, Coastal Expeditions and the Center for Birds or Prey teamed up this weekend to host an educational safari to Bull Island. Outdoorsy retirees and plenty of locals boarded Coastal Expeditions’ Bull Island Ferry in Awendaw Sunday morning to begin the adventure.

On the leisurely ride out to the barrier island, Ian Sanchez taught us more about wildlife and nature than we’ve learned since grade school science class. In fact, there was an overall field trip vibe to the excursion as we traipsed around the island, listened to naturalists, and even enjoyed a picnic lunch.

Riding in the back of a truck, we stopped at Alligator Alley to catch a glimpse of the island’s famed reptilian residents. We then braved swarms of horseflies to take a gander at Boneyard Beach. After a flying demo featuring some of the stars of the Center for Birds of Prey, we returned to the ferry and made our way back to the mainland.

We walked away overflowing with new knowledge regarding everything from how horseshoe crabs create their shells to how fast an owl grows to how Bull Island was affected by Hurricane Hugo. If you want to know the answers to those questions, keep an eye on the organizations’ websites for info on their next collaboration — it’ll be well worth your while.
