Re: “The freaks and geeks at the Statehouse go ga-ga over Sharia law

Sharia law includes a demand to enforce CRIMINAL punishments in a separate system from our judicial system. This is different than protecting religious conscience or beliefs- which usually entail people being allowed to refrain from being forced to do things against conscience; sharia wants the ability to have a separate enforcement of laws- especially for what they deem criminal. It is not xenophobic to take a stand against sharia law. All types of peoples are welcome, and all should be ready to participate in a common judicial system. You yourself mention sharia condoning beheading- how is it grandstanding to stand against such a system?

Re: “We should celebrate Christmas year round

What about govts taking in zillions of dollars and becoming self-perpetuating larger machines? At least most charities are composed of people who share a heart for doing good to others, and aren't made up of elite govt. types.
A just society isnt one where there are no ptoblems; a just society is one where individuals respond to other human beings.
You could do a whole redistribution of wealth and still have problems of many kinds!
As long as human beings aren't perfect- even the 'best' people make mistakes- there will be problems. We need to respond with love (which comes from the heart), to rich, poor, etc.
I agree that it's interesting people buying things to look more 'green' etc., and likewise people 'liking' things on facebook but not actually acting on it.

Re: “Officials say mixed-use biotech project would bring 3,000 residential units, generate $1 billion in investment

Agree with both of the above. (However, if nothing is at street level, that may not be very pedestrian or aesthetic.)
Do we not learn from other areas in other states, and our own downtown, prone to flood damage and drainage problems? Additionallly, being pro technology is excellent. However, biotech covers a wide range of activity, some of which is very controversial or unethical. Charleston should encourage responsible development.
We should fully consider what we are getting into and where the money is coming from before committing to a project on this scale with as many problematic issues- congestion, more expensive site prep & construction, drainage/run-off issues, etc.
Lastly, coming from West Ashley into downtown one used to be able to see more of Charleston. The approach from West Ashley is not aesthetically pleasing.
