We don’t mean to, but sometimes we take for granted the fact that we live by the water. Thankfully, the inaugural Watersports Week is here to remind us to take advantage of our shoreside locale. The 10-day event boasts over 20 water-based activities, broken into four categories: competition, recreation, instruction, and leisure. Competitors can partake in the Chuckdown Showdown (a paddleboard race) for a $22-$80 registration fee, while dragon boat fans can cheer for one of the five Southeast cancer survivor teams at the Carolina Celebration Cup. For those who are less competitive but still enjoy getting involved, attendees can participate in a variety of recreational activities, such as fishing, yoga, paddleboard tours, kayaking, parasailing, and more. For newbies itching to dive in, kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding, and surfing lessons will be held throughout the week. If you prefer something a little more laid-back, try one of the on-the-water tours of Charleston focusing on topics like nature, history, and photography. The expo, Sept. 12-14, will house a variety of vendors offering activities, information, and equipment. “This year is really a starting point. We already have people ready to align their events with ours in 2015,” says John Keener, event chair. “There is the possibility of a boat-building competition and race.” This year, the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission is holding a number of water-related events alongside the fest, including the Dog Day Afternoon at Whirlin’ Waters on Sept. 7. Since the locations for the events and activities are all over the Charleston area, the Lowcountry Loop Trolley will provide transportation to and from the major venues for $5 a day.
