Charleston Sound gets snazzy-jazzy

Vocalist Rene Marie and drummer Quentin Baxter track it down

In addition to tracking and mixing local songwriters, blues acts, and rock bands, recording studio Charleston Sound stayed busy this summer working with slew of local and visiting jazz artists, and hosting in-studio live performances. Chief engineer and owner Jeff Hodges rearranged his facility for several sessions with Charleston drummer Quentin Baxter and guests.

Earlier in the summer, as part of the Charleston Jazz Initiative's Legends Festival, Charleston Sound hosted a one-of-a-kind studio recording session featuring Baxter and several prominent jazz artists from around the country. Several sessions involved a 16-piece band with three horn sections.

Last month, Baxter returned with Denver-based jazz vocalist René Marie, who recently headlined a concert at the Gaillard as part of Spoleto's Wachovia Jazz Series. Marie and her quintet worked for five days, recording everything live to tape (no overdubs).
